I serve a school for grades 9-12 and many teachers have already brought students to check out materials. I am concerned about the number of teachers that place the requirement of having students choose books based on length (number of pages). The page length varies depending on the teacher but ranges from 150-200. For example a teacher might require 150 pages and a student will find a book with 142 pages and will take it to the teacher and the book is forbidden. I have talked to a few of the teachers and they are afraid that the students might "get by with reading something below his/her ability". The page requirements concern me for obvious reasons. I am going to meet with the English teachers as a group and discuss the ramifications of their requirements. If anyone has research, guidance, or experience- please share with me. I will post a hit if interested.
