Hi all,

These are two news stories that you might be interested in:

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/26665698/ This is on technology protections.

http://www.forbes.com/forbeslife/health/2008/09/15/bully-school-cyber-fo
rbeslife-cx_avd_0915health.html This is on cyberbullying.

Also, this is from my presentation notes for the Berkman/MySpace/AG task
force. I would appreciate your thoughts. I have not put this togeher in this
manner before.

The Trap of Believing in Technology ³Quick Fixes.²

A technology ³quick fix² is a technology solution designed in an attempt to
fix a human behavior problem by controlling intentional behavior.
Technology ³quick fixes² ...
Will not fix the human behavior problem.
Are likely to lead to false security and thus make the human behavior
problem worse.
Are ineffective because creative teens can easily bypass or undermine the
technology.

Distinguish from technology protection solutions that have a better chance
of being effective because they are designed to protect against harm coming
from the outside or accidental behavior.
Protect against ³malware.²
Create safer places for children online.
Provide users of social networking sites the ability to control who has
access to their information and can communicate.

Some technologies function both as effective protection and ³quick fixes.²
Filtering can provide effective protection for children ~ but will not
restrict teens.
Digital identification will be helpful for adults engaged in electronic
commerce, but will never be able to effectively control access to social
networking sites.

Technology ³quick fixes² do not work because seek to control intentional
behavior.
There are NO technologies that adults can use to effectively keep teens in
electronically fenced play-yards.
