Hi . . .

If you are interested in independent publishing, either as a prospective
activity or as a subject of study, you might be interested in the April
25, 2009, conference of Northern California Publishers & Authors (NCPA),
in Sacramento, CA.

The all-day conference is open to the public. Members of ALA or of LM_NET
may take advantage of the discounted member rate, extended to sister
organizations (generously defined).

Here are the basics:

=====
The morning keynote speaker, John Kremer, author of 1001 Ways to Market
Your Books, is the nation’s best book marketer. He’ll discuss book
marketing resources and how to market books through speaking engagements.

The afternoon speaker is Robert Brekke of Publishers Design Group in
Roseville, California. He a successful publisher, with several imprints
and many titles. His thoughts on book development will help publishers,
authors, and soon-to-be publisher and authors.

There will be hour-long sessions throughout the day will be presented by
writing coaches, editors, agents, instructors, and publicists. Come learn
from Nora Profit, of The Writing Loft. She’s very popular, because of her
excellent advice about making your writing soar (or at least reducing the
flaws)!

This daylong conference is an opportunity for emerging and established
authors and publishers to hear firsthand from experts. Lunch, which is
included in the registration price, will provide participants with an
opportunity to network.

Book Lovers Bookstore is our on-site bookstore. We will sell copies of the
speakers’ books, entries from the NCPA Awards 2009 (announced the night
before), and members.

Cost through April 15:
$80.00 for NCPA members and affiliates
$100.00 for nonmembers

Cost beginning April 16:
$100.00 for everyone

See http://www.norcalpa.org/events/2009-conference for more information.

I have been a member of the sponsoring organization (NCPA) since my days
with the California State Library, and have found it of value in several
ways -- enough so that I became a publisher myself, on a small scale, last
year. The conference director is the publisher of Kiyo Sato's memoir,
Dandelion Through the Crack, which won the 2008 William Saroyan
International Prize for Writing (nonfiction category) and has just been
republished as Kiyo's Story by Soho Press, New York. (I wrote a lengthy
review in the Web edition of Knowledge Quest, Sept/Oct 2007.)

NCPA is a nonprofit organization established in 1993 as the Sacramento
Publishers Association.

Please pass the word along if you know folks in the Sacramento region who
are interested in independent publishing. (The organization defines the
region rather broadly. The president lives in Oregon.)
