More responses: I expect my incoming fourth graders to: be stong users of the OPAC to understand call number arrangement, fiction and nonfiction, and be able to locate any book in the library be able to use an online encyclopedia for a simple search know different genres have some basic keyboarding skills basic research skills that allow them to find potential websites that might contain answers be able to create a basic document in Word ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- How to read the computer catalog screen. You can do that with a computer and power point, or make transparencies and project them on a screen or wall. Alphabetical order to the 3rd letter, and numerical order. Difference between author, title, and subject searches. Reference books and the idea that they don't check out. You might take some phots of various libraries and show how they are arranged. You might be able to call up the catalogs of various schools and show them how the on-line catalog works. It's tough. I came here last year and the kids knew very little. There had been no librarian to tech skills and information strategies for 8 years. This year is better and the lower grades are getting it faster than the upper grades.
