Hello, Thank you to all who took the time to reply to my question. Our English teacher contacted his professor and what he remembered as a short story was actually the opening chapters of the novel Play It As It Lays by Joan Didion. Special thanks to Roberta Lloyd who is a library director in L.A. who hit it out of the park and identified the piece correctly for us!!! dave Dave Wee, Librarian Harvard-Westlake Middle School 700 North Faring Road Los Angeles, California 90077 Phone -- (310) 288-3270 E-mail -- dwee @ hw dot com "You see, I don't believe that libraries should be drab places where people sit in silence, and that's been the main reason for our policy of employing wild animals as librarians." ~~ Monty Python ~~ -----Original Message----- From: Wee, David Sent: Wednesday, January 07, 2009 8:19 AM To: LM_NET@LISTSERV.SYR.EDU Subject: Gen: Do you know this short story? Happy new year! I have an English teacher in his late twenties who remembers reading this short story in college and is trying to locate this story. Details are sketchy, but this is what we have ... A woman is driving around Los Angeles and takes great pride in being able to successfully navigate the freeways of Los Angeles. He thinks that it may have been set in the 60s ... She's lonely and the story is a bit depressing with the typical portrayal of LA as a land of concrete and steel with little substance. I'm guessing the story was written close to when it was set and I don't believe her ethnicity was an issue at all. Any ideas?
