The favorite seems to be wikispaces. I got several responses, please read below. I got tips, and links to see examples in action. I included first names and states from those who shared tips and ideas. Thank you to everyone who responded. HIT LIST: Debbie in IL says: Our college prep class English class is currently using a wiki to create a local history website. They are collaborating as groups on several topics of local interest, gathering information, pictures, conducting interviews and then posting their work on a wiki. We are using wikispaces, which is currently free to educational institutions and the teacher and I really like it. There is a general discussion board where the teacher and I post general instructions and questions for the class as a whole. Each group/topic has their own page on the wiki and each page has its own discussion link, so each group can share questions/ideas within its own members. The teacher and I can monitor these discussions and any updates to their pages by clicking on the notify me link. Each change then generates an email to us, so we are on top of what the students are doing and saying to each other. One thing I really like about wikispaces is that you can make the wiki private, which means only people with a password can view the wiki. Ours is currently private, so you may not see it. But it's great to give the students an opportunity to work on their pages without the whole world watching. It also keeps outsiders from joining in discussions. Once their work is finalized, a simple click will take the wiki public. There may be other sites with fancier features, but so far we're really happy with wikispaces and what it is allowing us to do. Shannon in VT says: To comply with COPPA and the web 2.0 terms of service, you really only have one choice that I know of for elementary students under age 13: pbwiki.com. Wetpaint and wikispaces both require individual e-mail addresses (though you can use a g-mail piggyback account- teacheracct+1@gmail.com, teacher acct+2@gmail.com, etc) to register. pbwiki lets you create student accounts without requiring e-mail or age verification. Gail in IL says: This is the Wiki I use. They have free storage and other perks for education. It's pretty easy to use. There will always be something new available in blogs, wikis, etc.......but I try to resist other wise I would always be updating and improving. http://www.wikispaces.com/site/privatelabel/k-12 Katherine in UT says: have enjoyed using www.wikispaces.org They offer free wikis to educators, and they don't have any advertising. You can decide who you want to give access to editing the wiki. I have one for my library page: www.mopawiki.wikispaces.org It's simple and easy to edit. Aimee in KS says: I use wikispaces and it is great. Very easy for everyone to use. Charlottein FL says: Hi, I have just started a wiki for my library. This is the site. http://readingwiththestars.pbwiki.com/FrontPage The site web site that we are using has a portion of it that is free for educators. So far it has been extremely easy. I created student accounts for my 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade students and have been slowly introducing the wiki to them. As I said we have just started so I don't have a lot out there yet but I too hope that the kids will start talking about books. Hope this helps. Thanks again for sharing librarians!! We have ideas about teaching students to publish and share their new knowledge, but we need help with which sites are best. Please share your experiences, because we don't want to re-invent the wheel. I'll post a hit once we hear some good tales.
