Good morning, Earlier this week, cultural psychologist Stephanie Fryberg (PhD from Stanford) was on our campus presenting her research on the effects of Native imagery on the self-esteem of Native and non-Native children. It was chilling, frightening. A glimpse of the research: Students in the study were shown images of Pocahontas and Chief Wahoo. Follow-up testing self esteem showed that Native students who viewed the images was lower after viewing the images. Non-Native students self-esteem was elevated after viewing the images. They were also shown Fighting Irish imagery but that had no effect on either group. Newest research (not yet published) also demonstrated that, when shown a brown-skinned person (guy in t-shirt) following the Native imagery, non-Native students held negative feelings about the brown-skinned person. Emails get lost/deleted, so if later on you lose this email, go to my blog. I wrote about the study there (here's the tiny url: http://tinyurl.com/artonp). I'm willing to send you a pdf of the published article, too. Debbie Visit my Internet resource: American Indians in Children's Literature http://americanindiansinchildrensliterature.net Debbie A.
