Hello, My district announced this week that they will be cutting the elementary media specialists from 12 to 8. On Monday they would like to meet with us to discuss how 8 people will cover 12 buildings. We are release time for the classroom teachers. Our contract states we must provide 25 minutes for each class. Right now, most of us see classes for 45 minutes a week or else see the students for the 25 minute class time and an additional day for book check out. The new plan of 8 media specialists will not allow this. If you are in a district where you cover multiple buildings, and I realize that most people are these days, could you share your schedule with me? Here are some of my questions: How much time do you spend with scheduled classes in a week? Do you teach a lesson and check out books every week? How much "librarian" time do you have in each building? Do you have scheduled prep time for you? What happens to your media center when you are not in the building? Do you have additional staff assigned just to the media center? Please share any suggestions and advice that you might have.
