Hello, Carol--what a mess!
My sympathies--this isn't what I would call a "harmless" senior prank. I
hope you have been able to round them up! Contrary to your perception of
the ladybugs as wonderful creatures, IMHO these are tenacious pests that
will take up residence in wall cavities and behind books and book
stacks. When stressed (vacuumed up or swept into a dustpan) they smell
terrible and emit a liquid that stains carpets and any other surface.
They bite, too.
You see, I live in the northeast US where well-meaning gardeners have
imported boxes of non-indigenous ladybugs that have multiplied
unchecked. This year I have only vacuumed them up a half-dozen times,
but there were several years running that (no exaggeration here--) I
filled a vacuum-cleaner bag each day in my kitchen, living room and
upstairs bedrooms (1-2" deep in the windows). The attic stairs, walls
and floors were (no joke) covered in ladybugs--an undulating cover of
orange-red that was awful.

I grew up on a farm where we valued them as organic pest control, but I
don't like them anymore unless they're bright red with spots!

Best of luck!

Subject: [LM_NET] Lady Bugs

We had the pleasure of opening up our library this morning and finding
80,000 + ladybugs let loose in our wonderful new facility. Senior prank
day gone wild. It is an awful mess and many of us feel awful about the
waste of these wonderful creatures. I am
thankful it is the weekend and I can cool down.

Just venting........
