I read the book, Nurture Shock by Bronson and Merryman, over the weekend and found the chapter dealing with young children and their bullying behavior, particularly toward siblings, fascinating. He cites research that says that young children learn how to be mean in very specific ways from literature and videos that are used to help children learn how to be nice. The thesis is that these stories spend a lot of time depicting violent or cruel acts that these young children had never thought of before. The kids use the books as idea manuals, not deliberately, but just because they are too young to understand the "message" delivered at the end of the story. I am curious as to what you all think about this. Have any of you read this book or read reviews? I came across it because of the chapter on race which was discussed in Newsweek a few weeks ago, but the chapter on sibling relationships caught my attention also.
