I am new to a middle school in our district this year and really wanted to do a library orientation right away with all the kids because we have a new library due to remodeling. (It's wonderful to be in a nice big space!) Anyway, besides letting all the students know where we put everything when we unpacked and what my procedures are, I was interested in finding out what they knew about using the online catalog. There is a student response system for checkout in the library, so I installed the software on a computer and made a 10 question interactive quiz that I used to work my way through the important information about the OPAC. Kids loved using the remotes and locking in their answers and then seeing the results right away on screen. It was a good way to see what they knew and what they needed to be reminded about. (Like how to do a power search and why you would do a power search.) Some of them even wrote me thank you notes for letting them use the "clickers" for the first time. Just sharing, in case you have that type of technology in your building. Apparently the response system wasn't used by the teachers but now that they have all seen it in use, they are interested in using it, also.
