Subject: The All-Digital Prep School Library

Two words: So Sad!

From the Boston Globe Article:
http://bit.ly/YVRsE

[Snip]

Cushing Academy has all the hallmarks of a New England prep school, =20
with one exception.

This year, after having amassed a collection of more than 20,000 =20
books, officials at the pristine campus about 90 minutes west of =20
Boston have decided the 144-year-old school no longer needs a =20
traditional library. The academy?s administrators have decided to =20
discard all their books and have given away half of what stocked their =20
sprawling stacks - the classics, novels, poetry, biographies, tomes on =20
every subject from the humanities to the sciences. The future, they =20
believe, is digital.

[Snip]

And to replace those old pulpy devices that have transmitted =20
information since Johannes Gutenberg invented the printing press in =20
the 1400s, they have spent $10,000 to buy 18 electronic readers made =20
by Amazon.com and Sony. Administrators plan to distribute the readers, =20
which they?re stocking with digital material, to students looking to =20
spend more time with literature.

Those who don?t have access to the electronic readers will be expected =20
to do their research and peruse many assigned texts on their computers.

?Instead of a traditional library with 20,000 books, we?re building a =20
virtual library where students will have access to millions of =20
books,?? said Tracy, whose office shelves remain lined with books. ?We =20
see this as a model for the 21st-century school.??

Subject: Target: What Are Your 5 Best High School Databases

Wise Ones, we have been fortunate enough to have an increased budget this y=
ear, and I would like to add to our online databases. We currently subscri=
be to Gale Group. In addition, last year we tried Ferguson's Careers onlin=
e, and we were very pleased, so I intend to add it. We also have access to=
WorldBook online through our district and EBSCO Host through the state.

I would love to hear from you about what you would choose as your 5 top dat=

Many thanks in advance,

Subject: TARGET: Photos of school libraries

Dear Everyone
I am going to be offering a slideshow presentation at the upcoming Your School
Library online
conference called Landscaping your Library in which I will look at the pedagogical
reasons for
developing an attractive and stimulating library environment and supporting this
with ideas to do
this on a shoestring, suggestions for displays and photos of exciting library
environments.

I first presented this in 2006 at the SLANZA national conference but I would like
to update this
presentation with new photos, so if you have photos either as jpgs or on a website
I would really
appreciate it if you could send them (or the link) to me for use. I know there
have been several
posted lately as Australia has celebrated Children's Book Week but if you can send
me things of
yours offlist this will mean that I have your permission to use them. They will be
credited in the
acknowledgments.

For more information about the conference - the theme is Designing the Future -
please go to
http://yourschoollibrary.org

Thank you
Barbara
