I wholeheartedly agree that The Giver is geared to the middle school student, and
not elementary.

We could learn a lot from crayons:
some are sharp, some are pretty,
some are dull, some have weird names,
and all are different colors.... but
they all exist very nicely in the same box.

Let me first state that I am a HUGE Lowry fan, with "The Giver" being my favorite.
I know that the book has been previously challenged; however, I personally believe
it is a bit much for elementary, and think more of its appropriateness for Middle
School students.

We have a parent challenging The Giver in our elementary schools. This
parent, "...requested that this book not be used instructionally below
the middle school level within our district (elementary = K-6). He felt
the book was inappropriate for younger readers and dealt with concepts
such as infanticide and euthanasia that required a higher level of
maturity."

If you have had to deal with a challenge to The Giver and can offer any
suggestions, I'd really appreciate hearing from you. Our Instructional
Material committee meets next week to consider the challenge.

Thank you,
