Subject: Saving teacher librarians

I happen to know the Assistant Secretary of Education for Educational
Technology. I just sent her this message:

Hi Karen,

Something really bad is happening in every state that is going to put us

years behind in achieving the objectives of 21st century learning. Given

the funding problems, the staff positions that are being cut in many
locations are the teacher librarians. These professionals are the only
ones currently in schools who received the training necessary to engage
in effective digital literacy - assessment of information credibility.
All of the other teachers were training in the era when the textbook
publishers ensured the credibility of the information - and they simply
needed to teach from the text book.

The ONLY way that we are going to be able to make a shift to the kinds
of education necessary to support our children and teens in engaging in
the instructional activities they need to prepare themselves for their
future is to shift the role of teacher librarian from checking out books

to that of an information literacy specialist whose role it is to work
with teachers and students to gain 21st century literacy skills.

And that is not going to happen if all of the teacher librarians are
fired! What can be done rapidly to address this deteriorating situation?

There is a need for a "jobs bill" to save these vitally important
positions.

Nancy
