I would like to put my library on facebook as a page that parents, students, and community members can become fans. My technology directory is very leary of allowing this to happen. Does anyone have any policies or procedures set in writing for their districts? She just figured that's the way life is, and she couldn't do anything about it. But she's becoming more aware of the outside world: Medgar Evers has been shot, four young girls were killed in Birmingham and now her older brother is missing, a possible victim of racist violence. Addie Ann has to grow up quickly, use her head and learn to take a stand for what's right. Burg offers a sensitive portrait of a young girl and her family, never letting the larger history of the civil-rights movement overwhelm the particulars of this one place in time. The threat of violence is palpable, and the relationships among the residents of Kuckachoo-white and black-are realistically drawn, dramatizing both the legacy of racism and the hope of community. Addie Ann's story will help young readers realize that "You're never too young to speak up for justice and lead by your own example." (author's note, afterword, chronology) (Fiction. 9-12) Sharon M. Firstly, the 13+ restriction is there because it has something to do with US privacy law. The content of these sorts of sites are not 'censored' and so students can be exposed to or access stuff this age should not see. That's why so many Web 2.0 sites are blocked. Secondly, if the under-13 joins up with false ID and there is an issue, what will be the ramifications for the teacher who allowed this? What will be the ramifications for the education authority? Thirdly, what is the role model and what is it teaching students about ethical and legal use of the Internet? What will be the flow-over to other sites such as Facebook? Here in Australia, our education authorities are responding to the demand to be able to use basic Web 2.0 tools in class by s-l-o-w-l-y rolling out a suite of safe tools that operate within the state's networks and are thus protected. My state's stuff comes online next month so I don't know if it allows interstate or global access by invitation. But, in the meantime we look for apps like Photostory, Moviemaker or iMovie to use. Scholastic, 2009. 276 pages. In this second novel, Selfors has a real gem. Instead of writing yet anothe= r para-normal vampire or werewolf romance or adventure, Selfors bucks the t= rend toward dark fiction and writes a sweet novel about a girl, a boy, a fa= iling coffeehouse, an ailing grandmother, a mute waitress with a secret pas= t, a small Norwegian-American town, a mean shopkeeper with an agenda, oh, a= nd an angel. Selfors even pokes fun at the vampire trend, when Katrina thin= ks,"There are so many stories about girls dating vampires...Angels are supp= osed to be pure and sinless...It was kind of a relief that I wouldn't have = to fend off blood-sucking or enchantment on our first date." Katrina is a likeable girl who helps her grandmother run a small coffeehous= e called Anna's. The problem is that a new cofffee shop with lattes, mochas= , and imported coffees has opened across the street and wants to put Anna's= out of business. Katrina sees a homeless man sleeping the alley behind the= shop and gives him free coffee and day-old pastry. Little does she know, h= e's an angel and now must grant her heart's desire.
