I have a sixth grade boy who has turned into a voracious reader. What turned him on at the end of last year was Simon Bloom (Reisman) and the Softwire books (Haarsma.) Now he's at the point where he's read just about every scifi/fantasy/adventure title we have: Tolkein, Shanara, Narnia, Harry Potter, Lloyd Alexander, Nancy Farmer, Margaret Haddix, Mysterious Benedict Society, the Ember series ... and he has two more years to go before graduation! I'd love to start the new school year in September with some new titles for him, but need some suggestions. Higher reading levels are fine as long as the themes aren't too mature, and I also need to be careful about occult/dark magic kinds of themes. Thanks for any suggestions you might have! (I think he'd be open to transitioning into realistic or historical fiction too at this point if I presented him with just the right book ... what would be some great starters?)
