Jill - Intriguing idea! Since they're fifth graders, the first thought that comes to my mind is to use biography as the vehicle, and tell the story through the lives of some of its famous characters. Or, you could do the creative route, and make up imaginary characters of your/their choice, and revolve the story around major themes or events, letting the anonymous storytellers spin the tale.
