The Internet

ARPANET  .                        .   CREN (Bitnet + CSNet)
            .                    .
               ..NSFNET . . .REST of the World
           .                   .
        .                         .

MCI, CompuServe, L, Delphi, &c NEARNet, NYSERNet
  (Individuals, Corporations)           Other Networks

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

WHY:
     Electronic mail
     Electronic journals
     Electronic conferencing systems
     Remote file transfer
     Remote interaction (OPACs and other sources)

ELECTRONIC MAIL:
     No more telephone tag, no more long-distance charges
     Internet addresses consists of username plus address
     name@hostcomputer.institution.domain, e.g.
cschwartz@vmsvax.simmons.edu
     Domains say what type of institution or what country
     Namess that look look like name@institution are Bitnet
addresses

ELECTRONIC JOURNALS:
     Some are free, some are by subscription
Issues:
     How is journal provided/distributed to patron
     Who archives: library or provider
     Who prints: library or patron

ELECTRONIC CONFERENCING SYSTEMS:
     Two main types: listserv lists, and bulletin boards
     LISTSERV list features
          Subscribing, unsubscribing, suspending temporarily
          Archives (old messages, files), Lists of members
          E-mail search, F and gopher access to archives
          Commands TO THE LISTSERV,
               e.g., listserv@kentvm kent.edu
          Messages TO THE LIST once subscribed,
               e.g., dorothyl@kentvm.kent.edu
     Bulletin boards (e.g., Usenet, local BBS's)

REMOTE FILE TRANSFER (FTP)
     Copying files from the directories of other computers
     Many systems allow for "anonymous 1'
     Text files, binary files (software, images, sound)
     Essentials
          Only use FTP before 8 AM and after 5 PM
          Login anonymous, give full e-mail address if asked
          Issue dir command, mo into desired directory
          If there is a readme file, type it and read it Identify
desired file, including size and type
          Issue get command to transfer files
          (can be slow for a big file)
          FTP directories express file size in blocks,
               1 block is approximately 500 bytes
          Must know about handling different file formats

REMOTE INTERACTION (TELNET)
     Remote interaction: the telnet command
     Issue telnet plus address of the remote system

FINDING OUT WHO AND WHAT'S OUT THERE:
     E-mail addresses (first, ask the individual)
          Print: Membership directories, journal article "about
the author" information
          Online: List members, Campus Wide Information
Systems,
White pages services
     Lists and ejournals on a subject
          Print: Texts, directories
          Online: Directories, archives
     Documents on the Internet
          FAQ = frequently asked questions
          RFC = request for comments
          FYI = for your information
               Often available from the archive of a listserv
list
               Available via 1 from many sites; available on
gophers
          To find out about getting RFCs and FYIs
          Send this message to rfc-
               INFO@ISI.EDU
               help:ways to get rfcs'
