Future Scenarios for School Library Media Programs will
be the topic of the next Treasure Mountain Retreat .
Preceding the American Association of School Librarians
national conference in Indianapolis, this one-day
exploration of schooling in the future is scheduled for
November 8, 1994.

The Treasure Mountain Research Retreats are informal
gatherings of researchers and practitioners in school
library media centers. Designed to explore research
topics of interest in the field, the retreats are named
after the location of the first gathering near
"Treasure Mountain" in Park City, Utah. The retreats
are loosely connected to the Research Committee of the
American Association of School Librarians but are not
an official activity of that organization. Notices are
sent to anyone interested in research and its
application. The purpose of this fifth retreat is to
explore the future roles of the school library media
specialist and the library media program.

Featured presenter will be Jim Mecklenburger,
President, The Mecklenburger Group. The work of this
education futurist will be the focal point for
discussion of papers by their authors on such topics
as: What will children's lives be like in the future
(next 10-20 years)? What will future schooling be like?
What will teaching be like in the future? What is the
role of information professionals in future schooling?
What is the role of information services in future
schooling? What is the probable education required for
future information professionals? What kinds of
nurturing will be required for information
professionals, i.e., continuing education, networking,
professional associations? What research will be
required to lead and support the future information
professional?

The retreat is co-chaired by Dan Barron, College of
Library and Information Science, University of South
Carolina, and Bob Grover, School of Library and
Information Management, Emporia State University.
