Hello LM_NET Colleagues, I received the following urgent message from a colleague who is an ISTE board member. Since it involves someone who is an active Internet advocate for K-12, I thought our members might liketo know about this situation, and respond if they deem appropriate. Peter Milbury ---------- Forwarded message ---------- Date: Sun, 31 Jul 1994 22:24:53 -0700 (PDT) From: Terrie Lynn Gray <tgray@eis.calstate.edu> Subject: Dr. Fouad Dehlawi (fwd) Peter--I'm just forwarding this to you because it must be one of the most unusual messages I've ever received. Talk about power to the people!!! Tgray ---------- Forwarded message ---------- Date: Tue, 26 Jul 94 16:59:54 pst From: Talbot Bielefeldt <Talbot_Bielefeldt@ccmail.uoregon.edu> To: iste-list@tenet.edu Subject: Dr. Fouad Dehlawi To: The ISTE Board: From: Talbot Bielefeldt We have been contacted by the American in-laws of one of our members, Dr. Fouad Dehlawi of King Abdul Aziz University in Saudi Arabia, informing us that Dr. Dehlawi was imprisoned in Saudi Arabia without charges, apparently for pro-democracy political activity critical of his government. Dr. Dehlawi earned his PhD from Stanford, and ISTE corresponds with him through the Washington state address of his wife's family. The family and the American-Arabian Public Affairs Committee suggests that concerned individuals contact the people below, and also address your concerns to Mr. John Shattuck, Bureau of Human Rights, Department of State, 2201 C St., NW, Washington, DC 20520. The ISTE office has taken no "official" action on this matter, except to retain Dr. Dehlawi as a member during his imprisonment. I can fax copies of the materials the family mailed to us on request. <begin forwarded message, transcribed surface mail from American-Arabian Public Affairs Committee, PO Box 88813, Seattle, WA 98138-2813; 206/271-3730, Fax 206/244-2991> REQUEST FOR YOUR ACTION: To stop the dictatorial regime of Saudi Arabia from physical and psychological torture of innocent people who are not charged with any crime we ask that you do the following: A.
