Hello LM_NET Colleagues,

I received the following urgent message from a colleague who is an
ISTE board member. Since it involves someone who is an active Internet
advocate for K-12, I thought our members might liketo know about this
situation, and respond if they deem appropriate. Peter Milbury

From: Talbot Bielefeldt

We have been contacted by the American in-laws of one of our members,
Dr. Fouad Dehlawi of King Abdul Aziz University in Saudi Arabia,
informing us that Dr. Dehlawi was imprisoned in Saudi Arabia without
charges, apparently for pro-democracy political activity critical of his
government.

Dr. Dehlawi earned his PhD from Stanford, and ISTE corresponds with
him through the Washington state address of his wife's family.

The family and the American-Arabian Public Affairs Committee suggests
that concerned individuals contact the people below, and also address
your concerns to Mr. John Shattuck, Bureau of Human Rights, Department
of State, 2201 C St., NW, Washington, DC 20520.

The ISTE office has taken no "official" action on this matter, except
to retain Dr. Dehlawi as a member during his imprisonment. I can
fax copies of the materials the family mailed to us on request.

REQUEST FOR YOUR ACTION:

To stop the dictatorial regime of Saudi Arabia from physical
and psychological torture of innocent people who are not
charged with any crime we ask that you do the following:

A. Write letters to your Senators and Congressmen bringing
this situation to their attention and asking them to speak
against Human Rights violations in Saudi Arabia.

B. Write POLITELY-WORDED letters to H.R.H. Bandar bin Sultan,
Ambassador of Saudi Ambassador at Saudi Arabian Embassy, 601
New Hampshire Ave. N.W., Washington, DC 20037 asking that Dr.
Dehlawi and the others either be charged before the Shar'ia
courts or immediately be released with full restoration of
their honor and reputations.

C. Write POLITELY-WORDED letters to H.R.H. Mohammed Al-
Faisel, Director of Islamic Affairs at Saudi Arabian Embassy,
601 New Hampshire Ave. N.W., Washington, DC 20037 asking that
Dr. Dehlawi and the others either be charged before the
Shar'ia courts or immediately be released with full
restoration of their honor and reputations. You may also call
them at 202/342-3800 or fax your letter to 202/944-5982.

D. Write letters to as many Muslim Embassies in Washington as
possible asking them to intervene on behalf of Muslim
scholars currently being held in Saudi jails.

E. Copy and distribute this news release within your
community, or pass this copy to a friend and ask them to do
the same.
