Hello New LM_NET Member,

Welcome to LM_NET. The following information is an additional
update to the initial message sent to you by the listserv computer,
when you were added to LM_NET.

PLEASE, if you haven't done so already, save this message, which
   contains V E R Y _important_ information on how LM_NET operates,
including how to set your account while on vacation to NOMAIL (keeping
your mailbox from overflowing,) and how to signoff (heaven forbid!)

INTERNET/BITNET POSTING TO LM_NET
If you are a Bitnet user, please always use our Bitnet address when
   posting messages to LM_NET: LM_NET@SUVM

If you use the Internet address, your messages will probably be
   rejected by the listserv computer.

Likewise, if you have an Internet account, please use our Internet
   listserv address: LM_NET@SUVM.SYR.EDU

MAIL CONTROL
You will receive an average of thirty messages each day from LM_NET.
Please be sure to check your mail regularly, and delete mail after you
have made use of it. If your mailbox becomes full, your mail is sent
back to the sender (i.e., Mike or Peter) and it clogs up our mailboxes,
causing unnecessary work, such as the deletion of your membership in
LM_NET. (Of course, we will reinstate you when the problem is fixed.)

A FRIENDLY REMINDER
Conversation on LM_NET should focus on the topics of interest to
the school library media community, including the latest on school
library media services, operations, and activities. It is a list
for practitioners helping practitioners, sharing ideas, solving
problems, telling each other about new publications and up-coming
conferences, asking for assistance or information, and linking
schools through their library media centers.

The LM_NET discussion is open to ALL school library media specialists -
worldwide- and people involved with the school library media field.
It is _not_ for general librarians or educators. We want to keep the
activity and discussion focused on school library media. But, the
listserv can be used by library media people for many different things-
to ask for input, share ideas and information, link programs that are
   geographically remote, make contacts, etc.

ASSISTANCE IS AVAILABLE TO YOU FROM LM_NET SKILLS INDEX MENTORS
In the interest of helping our members become brave and independent
surfers on the Internet, LM_NET sponsors the Skills Index. In the
Skills Index you will find the names and e-mail addresses of kindly LM_NET
members who have volunteered to field questions in areas of their
telecommunications expertise. These experienced network users are
available to members who need assistance in getting acquainted with
network resources. For more details on how to volunteer for this service,
   please contact Shelley Lochhead (s_lochhead@NHNET.UNH.EDU)

For information on the resources and people available to help you, please
obtain The Telecommunications Skills Index file, stored in the LM_NET
file list with the name SKILLS INDEX. Anyone can fetch a copy at any time by
sending the following command by e-mail to:

LISTSERV@SUVM.SYR.EDU (or LISTSERV@SUVM, for Bitnet users)

     GET SKILLS INDEX LM_NET

LM_NET DAILY DIGEST OPTION AVAILABLE
If you would like to have all of the messages posted to LM_NET compiled
into a single message, and sent to your mailbox _once_ each day, you now
have that option. (If more than 175 lines of messages are posted on a
given day, another daily digest will be issued after that cutoff point.)

To activate the LM_NET Digest feature, send a mail message to:
LISTSERV@SUVM (if Bitnet user) or LISTSERV@SUVM.SYR.EDU (if Internet)
with one of the following commands in the _body_ of the message,
(- not on the Subject: line.)

To turn the digest on: SET LM_NET DIGEST
To turn the digest off: SET LM_NET MAIL

Bitnet users MUST send commands to the Bitnet address!

TEMPORARILY STOPPING MAIL FROM LM_NET
If you want to stop receiving mail from LM_NET for a period of time, all
you have to do is send a specific message to the listserv computer which
   handles LM_NET mail.

   1. Send the message to this address: listserv@suvm.syr.edu
                                    or: listserv@suvm
   2. In the body of the message, type the following:
      set lm_net nomail
Please leave the Subject: line blank (i.e., no subject.)

   * To restart your LM_NET mail, send to the same address, the following:
      set lm_net mail

LM_NET ADDRESSES: TWO, EACH FOR A DIFFERENT PURPOSE
Many features of this discussion group are automated. Our listserv
computer automatically handles two types of messages through its
listserv software, using separate addresses through which it receives
   its e-mail message commands:

   a. Mail messages to ALL LM_NET members:
      LM_NET@SUVM.SYR.EDU or to LM_NET@SUVM.BITNET

   b. Administrative listserv requests (i.e., to the computer):
      LISTSERV@SUVM.SYR.EDU or to LISTSERV@SUVM.BITNET

Bitnet users MUST send commands to the Bitnet address!

POSTING YOUR MAIL MESSAGES TO ALL LM_NET MEMBERS
How do you send a message to all of the other subscribers of LM_NET?
It's easy. Just send an e-mail message as you would to anyone else with
an electronic mail address. Send to: LM_NET@SUVM.SYR.EDU
                                     or: LM_NET@SUVM (Bitnet only)

If you post a message to LM_NET, please note that you WILL receive
a copy of your message from the listserv.

HOW TO SIGN OFF FROM LM_NET
You may leave the LM_NET at any time by sending a "SIGNOFF LM_NET"
   command by e-mail to: LISTSERV@SUVM.SYR.EDU
                     or: LISTSERV@SUVM (Bitnet only)

Please note that this command is sent only to the listserv address:
LISTSERV@SUVM.SYR.EDU or LISTSERV@SUVM [It must _NOT_ be sent to the
   membership list address.]

HOW TO FIND OUT AN LM_NET MEMBER'S E-MAIL ADDRESS, OR CONCEAL YOURS
Please note that it is presently possible for other people to determine
that you are signed up to the list through the use of the "REVIEW"
command, which returns the network address and name of all the subscribers.
If you do not wish your name to be available to others in this fashion,
   just e-mail a "SET LM_NET CONCEAL" command to: LISTSERV@SUVM.SYR.EDU
                                              or: LISTSERV@SUVM (Bitnet)

If you want to see a list of LM_NET members with their e-mail addresses,
send the command "REVIEW LM_NET" by e-mail to: LISTSERV@SUVM.SYR.EDU
                                              or: LISTSERV@SUVM (Bitnet)

OBTAINING MORE INFORMATION ON LISTSERV COMMANDS AND OPERATIONS
More information on LISTSERV commands can be found in the
"General Introduction Guide", which you can retrieve by sending
an "INFO GENINTRO" command by e-mail to LISTSERV@SUVM.BITNET This is
an excellent way to learn about listservers, an important part of Internet
   services and resources.

FINDING THE LM_NET ARCHIVES AND RELATED INFORMATION
The LM_NET Archives and other interesting related information is
now available at the AskERIC Gopher site.

One quick way to find it is to use your telnet to go directly there,
and then, by going through a series of menus, you will reach the
LM_NET Archives, etc. (Of course, you can Gopher there as well, port 70.)

For example: Telnet to the AskERIC Gopher:

   1. Telnet to> ericir.syr.edu
   2. At the login prompt, type: gopher
   3. At the TERM=(vt100) prompt, press: return key (or enter your terminal
type), and then enter your name at the request. You will then be
      given the following menu:

----------------------------------------------------------------------
Welcome to The AskERIC Public Access System
Providing Resources and Services Related to K12 Education

Please make a selection from the choices below...

       1. Access The AskERIC Virtual Library via GOPHER
       2. Access The AskERIC Virtual Library via WWW
       3. AskERIC a Question (MUST INCLUDE RETURN ADDRESS IN MESSAGE)
       4. Mail AskERIC with Comments about this Service
       5. Exit

Your choice [1,2,3,4, or 5]:

-----

   4. Select choice: "1. Access The AskERIC Virtual Library via GOPHER"

LM_NET is found by moving through the following directories, which
are given as menu choices through the Gopher menu:

 -->  AskERIC - (Educational Resources Information Center)/
   -->  Education Listservs Archives/
     -->  LM_NET/
          [And there you are!]

-----
(For example, Telnet and log-on to AskERIC. Then you first must
go into "The AskERIC Virtual Library via GOPHER", then choose
"Education Listservs Archives", then "LM_NET", and you will enter
the LM_NET section, which includes the discussion Archives, the
LM_NET Directory, the Skills Index of LM_NET Mentors, and other
   interesting information.)

Happy searching! (It's a lot of fun to see what has been posted there.)

THE LM_NET DIRECTORY OF MEMBERS
There is an optional LM_NET Directory of members posted to the LM_NET
Archives. Just follow the instructions immediately above to locate it.

LM_NET MONITORS OTHER RELATED LISTSERV DISCUSSION GROUPS
In order to enable LM_NET members benefit from important information which
may be posted to other listserv discussion groups with related interests,
a number of members are actively monitoring various lists and information
sources. When useful messages and information is found, it is re-posted
to LM_NET. The need to subscribe to several library-oriented lists is
thereby lessened. Some of the lists and resources currently monitored
are: MEDIA-L, HYPERCRD, CoSN, EdTech, Kidsnet, CDROMLAN, CNI-Copyright,
Publit. COSN, Internet Hunt Announcement and Results, PACS-L, ALA Feminist
Task Force, EDNET, Hilites/NIC.CerfNet, CARR-L (Journalism list), and
   NEWLIST-L.

If you subscribe to a list which is not included in those above, and would
like to become an LM_NET Monitor, please contact Peter Milbury, at the
address below for guidelines. A successful Monitor program allows LM_NET
to be the "List of Lists" for school library media professionals.

HOW TO SHARE LM_NET WITH YOUR COLLEAGUES
To subscribe to LM_NET, just do this:

   1. Send an e-mail message to: listserv@suvm.syr.edu
(If Bitnet user, send to: listserv@suvm )

   2. In the first line of the message, type:

       SUBSCRIBE LM_NET Firstname Lastname

(Of course, you would substitute your actual name in the line, such as
"SUBSCRIBE LM_NET Libby Rarian" No quotes necessary

The LM_NET listserv computer will respond with an informative message,
which will ask for a confirmation. You will then be added if you
   properly follow the directions.

TARGET/HIT->  AN LM_NET DISCUSSION TOOL
Your LM_NET moderators are suggesting an additional way to focus our
discussions, and make them more valuable in the process. This may seem
a bit more formal that is common on most lists, but it might serve us well
as we grow (we now have more than 800 people reading the list.) We recommend
that members specifically TARGET-> their queries, and use a HIT-> summary
   to share their responses received.

That is, when someone wants information about a topic (e.g., online
catalogs), they would ask for people to respond to them directly, and
after a period of time, post a summary or compilation of responses. The
originator of the TARGET-> question uses that term in the subject line of
the initial question that is posted to the entire list.

For example, "TARGET-> Choosing Online Catalogs - March 1993." would
appear in the subject line of the message. In the body of the message the
person might say something like the following:
"Hi, this is Mike Eisenberg. I would like to TARGET-> Choosing Online
Catalogs. I'd like to find out how others on LM_NET are choosing their
Online Catalogs. If people will respond to me, I'll compile your
responses and post A HIT-> on the topic back to the entire LM_NET."

Then, when enough responses are collected, the originator summarizes
or compiles the responses, and posts the TARGET-> topic summary as a HIT->
so everyone on the list can read, _if_ they are interested. This is a
terrific way to add value to the list. And it will cut down on some of
the extra traffic. It also still allows for stimulating discussions
   about key issues.

The TARGET/HIT-> approach is particularly effective when someone has a
specific question that needs a variety of suggestions, experiences,
practices or sources. It is not _always_ appropriate. The intent of
TARGET/HIT-> is to make LM_NET more valuable to its growing list of members.

SUMMARY:  TARGET/HIT-> is a four-step process:
   1. The TARGET-> originator proposes the subject for answering/commenting.
       i.e., TARGET-> Choosing Online Catalogs.
   2. Those interested in the subject send their responses to the
_originator_ of the TARGET-> question. Please do NOT post the
       response to the group.
   3. TARGET-> originator summarizes or collates the responses, and then,
   4. Posts the summarized responses to the entire list, using the original
subject of their message as a HIT->.
       i.e., HIT-> Choosing Online Catalogs.
Thank you for your support of this innovation for Internet discussions.

We hope your comments and questions, observations and ideas will be shared
with the entire LM_NET list. If you have any questions about LM_NET, please
feel free to contact either of us.

Virtually,

Mike Eisenberg (MIKE@ERICIR.SYR.EDU)
Peter Milbury (PMILBUR@CTP.ORG)
