Dear lm_net -
I apologize for the incomplete postings. My phone line or computer is
apparently hostile. IUll try once more.
The day after the Helms/Smith amendment, which was characterized
as denying federal funds to schools that promoted homosexual activity,
was passed a representative from Concerned Women of America
talking on Wisconsin Public Radio spoke of it as denying federal
funds to schools that were accepting of homosexual activities. She
seemed to be including books in her discussion.
Senator Smith had used the book Heather has two Mommies
as his example of the evils that are showing up in our schools.
If this doesnUt have far reaching effects on our library media centers
I will be very surprised.
I immediately called my senator, Herb Kohl, who voted with 22
other democrats on the side of the majority. No one has mentioned
the Kennedy amendment which followed Helms which said
schools shouldnUt promote any sexual activity. I think this was an attempt
to make HelmsU amendment meaningless. I donUt think it worked.
That one passed unanimousl y. IUm waiting to get the text of the
actual amendment. In the meantime, we should all call our
congresspeople for an explanation. IUm afraid they didnUt realize
 what could happen.
