Dear LM_Netters:
I will be starting a position in a couple of weeks as a High
School Library Media Specialist/District Tech. Coor. in a small, rural
district. We are interested in setting up a LAN, and eventually WAN.
The schools are currently primarily Macintosh. Networking is a new area
for me and I am becoming more confused the more I know! Most of the
information in the literature seems to be about networking in the IBM
environment. Can someone point me in the right direction for Macintosh
and is it a feasible route to be exploring?
I would really appreciate any information on recommended servers,
network software, connecting CD-ROM drives to network, cables,
hubs, etc. At this point, I'm don't have a clear idea of all the pieces
required for a LAN. It sounds like Ethernet 10baseT might be the wiring
to use? Is there a Macintosh network that supports that? Does Novell
support a Macintosh platform?
Any information on basic components needed, recommended hardware
(w/ a ballpark price range), or books, articles to read would be very
helpful. Please reply directly to me. Thank you very much.
