Do the kids still play the game of jacks? My boss, Mary Lankford, is writing a book on jacks. (She already has one out called Hopscotch Around the World, ISBN 0-688-08419-2, NY: Morrow). She has been trying (unsuccessfully) to find out why jacks have the shape they do: the star shape. She said that the United States is the only country that has the jacks in a star shape. I don't know what other countries have; her book isn't out yet). If you know why jacks are in a star shape, please write back or write to Mary Lankford directly (mdlankfo@tenet.edu). This would be the symbolic reason, not the practical reason, for the shape. Or if you know of any other versions of the game of jacks, she would like that information as well. Wade H.
