Ok, so I was duped again. What grinch would do this? Please disregard the message I forwarded to you yesterday about sending messages to santa@north.pole.org and having money go to charity. I found a notice on another listserv that said it was a HOAX and was intended to spam (new vocabulary word for me but it means something like jam the mailbox with so many messages that it becomes non-functional!). However, there is SOME hope (and maybe where the rumor grew from. If you have access to WWW and you go to http://north.pole.org/ you will find MANY interesting things: 1) A message requesting that you PLEASE not spam Santa because he is very busy this time of the year (no explanation of spamming here, but I think it is what I mentioned above). 2) Some links to information about different charitable organizations and projects. When you go to those pages, you find that, indeed, each one is sponsored and the sponsor (and one is Sun MicroSystems) WILL give the organization or project 10 cents for every time the page is accessed. There are some VERY interesting projects involved, so do take a look. Heck, I'd pay the dime just to learn what I did about spamming! Anyway, in the spirit of the holidays, let's assume that the message was sincere and just got mixed up in the process. Stop sending copies of everything to santa. Just send him (or her) a nice note wishing for peace on earth, good will among all, and sufficient funding to help library media specialists all over the world do the job that is so important to teaching and learning. Happy Holidays!
