-=0=- F Y I -=0=- as per below -=0=- Forwarded Information: File Transfers Using Pine (A file transfer does not erase the original file) Files can be divided into two kinds, according to what kind of information they contain. Ascii (sometimes called text) files contain only textual information such as letters, numbers, and the special characters above the numbers on the top of the standard keyboard. Binary files contain textual information, and also codes, such as the WordPerfect hard page, or Quattro Pro cell information codes. Most mail programs cannot send binary information, but those mail programs that are compatible with the new MIME standard for information transfer, can send and receive binary information as "attached files". Pine is MIME compatible. It has a section called "Attachments" in the header area of the "Compose" screen. USING PINE TO SEND A FILE (either ascii or binary) AS AN ATTACHMENT TO A PERSON WHO ALSO USES A MIME COMPATIBLE MAIL PROGRAM: 1- Go into "compose" mode. 2- On the "Attachments:" line of the header, type in the name of the file you want to send. The file should be located in your home directory, or else you must type in the relative pathname of the file. 3- When you cursor away from the Attachments field, watch the name you typed in expand. You should see the size of the file in parentheses. 4- You can move your cursor to the double quotes, and enter a comment between those quotes. It is helpful to specify what kind of a file you are sending, eg: wp5, quattro 123, etc, so that the recipient knows how to deal with the file once received. 5- Send the "letter" as usual. 6- The letter that you sent, including the attachment, are saved in your folder called "sent-mail". If the attachment was a big one, you would be well advised to go into that folder and delete that message to save file space in your directory. USING PINE TO RECEIVE AN ATTACHED FILE 1- "view" the message 2- Type "a" for attachments 3- You are asked: Enter attachment number to view or save (1 - 2): you will type the number beside the line that specifies a filename and size, NOT the number beside the word "Shown". 4- You are asked: Save or View attachment? (s/v) [s] You should hit enter, which will select "save". 5- You are asked: File (in home directory) to save attachment in: xxxxx where xxxxx will actually be the name of the file that someone sent you. If you want to save the file out to a file in you home directory with the same name as the name that was sent to you, just hit enter. (If you already have a file there by that name, you will be asked if you want to overwrite.) 6- Now you have "saved out" the file. You can exit Pine, and deal with the file in whatever way is appropriate, eg, call it into WP or qcalc etc. 7- After you have seen that your "attachment save" procedure worked, you should go back into pine and delete the message that the person sent you, as it will potentially be a large file, and there is no sense in having that file exist both in your account and in your mailbox. source : Pine Manual via envirolink.org gopherspace directory search Wade Grimes H L Purdin High School Elsberry, Missouri 63343 0106 voice 314 898 5553 -\- fax 314 898 3140 internet wgrimes1@services.dese.state.mo.us (main adrs) wgrimes@bigcat.missouri.edu (secondary adrs) -=0=- A R S WA0MHP -=0=-
