Following is information as promised on HR 6 and S 1513 status.. My
Compuserve account and LM_NET were not well matched in Miami.. Now that I am
home, here is the report..

From a ALAWO Fact Sheet distributed at ALA conference to the Board of AASL:
"The full Senate Labor and Human Resources Committee approved S.1413 on June
15. The bill includes a setaside for school library resources in Title III
Part E, Elem and Secondary School Library Media Resources Program. From Part
A, Educational Technology for all students, 10 to 20 % of amounts authorized
would be set aside for SLM resources. Authorization level for Title III Part
A is about $337 million. Senator Mosley-Braun's school and school library
facilities bill was added to the bill in the committee. The bill also
specifies technology training for school library media specialists.
In the House, HR 6 was passed which includes a Title II Part C, Library
Media Program, including dedicated funds for school library media programs.
Authorization level for Part C are $200 million.

The Senate bill will be voted on by the full Senate, possibly the last week
in June. Committee staff expect the bill to be finalized prior to the July 4
recess. Then there will be a joint conference between house and senate. Once
agreement is reached the bill is reported back to both House and Senate for
final action. If approved, the bill is sent to President for signature."

House appropriations subcommittee chose to fund some portion of HR 6, but
they did not fund the school library resources provisions in HR 6. In the
Senate, the Appropriations committee is scheduled to approve the Labor,
Health and human Services and Education bill on July 15. The need is for
School Library Media Specialists to contact the Senate Labor, Health, and
Human Services and education Appropriations sumcommittee and full committee
stressing the importance of school library resources and asking for funding
in s.1513.. Subcommittee members are: Chair Harkin (D-IA), Byrd (D-WVA);
Hollings, Inouye, Dale Bumpers; Harry Reid; Herb Kohl; Patty Murray; Arlen
Specter; Mark hatfield; Ted Stevens;Thad Cochran; Slade Gorton; Connie Mack;
Christopher Bond.."
