In the June 1994 High School Magazine (a relatively new (4th issue) magazine put out by NASSP, and as part of the membership for, and I quote, "principals, assistant principals, and all high school leaders"), there is an article entitled "The Care and Maintenance of the School Library/Media Specialist" written by Susan Bates Johnson, a librarian at Central High School in Aberdeen, S. Dak. Although the role descriptions that she uses omit and/or weaken the (I believe) crucial teaching role of the high school librarian (her roles are those of WAREHOUSING, DIRECT INFORMATION SERVICES, and INSTRUCTIONAL CONSULTATION), the suggestions for the role that the high school administrator has in ensuring the success of the library media program are excellent. There are 6 points on exactly how the administrator should be involved and what his/her expectations should be of the program. A good discussion-starter to be attached to a monthly report with a request for a follow-up meeting to discuss in depth.
