The Birmingham, Alabama Public Schools have announced library/media openings in elementary and middle schools for the 1994-95 school year. Alabama certification as a library-media specialist is required. The libraries in the Birmingham Public Schools have made steady progress in the last decade. The history and goals of the libraries in the school system have been noted in the May, 1994 issue of School Library Journal in the article written by Dr. Geraldine Bell, Coordinator of Media Resources, called "Blossoming in Birmingham: How One City's School System in Beating the Odds and Growing Readers," pages 21-23. The libraries in the Birmingham Public Schools work closely with the community to encourage reading among the city's children. Birmingham, the largest city in Alabama, is located at the southern end of the Appalachian Mountains. The climate is pleasant throughout the year and the cost of living is low, compared with some other areas in the United States.
