Don't throw those old Dr. Dolittle books away! These and others like it
have a potential to be the hottest fall reading ever.
So many advance tickets were sold in the Birmingham area for the movie "The
Lion King" that theatres are having to show it on additional screens. I plan
to capitalize on the popularity of the movie by promoting books about jungles,
jungle animals, and Africa when school starts in August. Since the majority
of my students will have seen the movie, this provides an excellent opportunity
to promote reading. I also plan bulletin boards around the movie theme.
Last year when Jurassic Park was popular, I did the same thing with books
about dinosaurs. Students asked for dinosaur books all year and the displays
were so popular that I still have some of them up.
If anyone has any more ideas about how to promote reading using a popular
movie, please let me know.
