In this five-credit course, collaborative roles of school library/media specialists, classroom teachers, and educational technology specialists are modeled as curriculum projects are explored, adapted and developed by teams. Internet tools including Gopher, Veronica, listservs and K-12 newsgroups will be covered, as well as issues affecting educators, such as ethics of access, copyright, network structures and censorship. The course includes a five-day lab, June 27-July 1, and an online independent study component, July 2-Jan. 27, 1995. The lab, held at the Issaquah School District computer facility, simulates a classroom environment using a local network. During the online independent study follow-up, participants will continue their professional collaboration and integrate curriculum applications at their school site. Instructors will continue to assist participants through regular online mentoring. The instructional team for the course includes Linda Baker, technology consultant for Rainier Beach High School and teaching associate in education at the University of Washington; Andrew Barker, technology coordinator for Lakeside School and Internet trainer; Sheryl Burgstahler, assistant director of Information Systems for Computer and Communications at the University of Washington and director of Project DO-IT; David Edfelt, educational technology specialist and coordinator of Technology Information Project, Issaquah School District; Madelynne Johnson, librarian at The Bush School and presenter on K-12 Internet applications; Sandra Koehn, media specialist and district staff trainer in Processing Information Environments for Bellevue School District; Jonathan Kochmer, author of "The Internet Passport" and Internet consultant; Jamieson McKenzie, director of technology, Bellingham Schools, and author of "Power of Learning;" and Janice Perry, elementary teacher in the Seattle School District and 1991 Christa McAuliffe Educator of the Year. Prerequisites include basic Internet or e-mail experience and access to a computer and modem for the online independent study component. Individuals may register for five credits of either EDC&I 494 or LIBR 498 credit graded on a credit/no credit basis only. The course meets the requirement for Learning Resources endorsement areas #4: Information Services and #6: Instructional Methods in Learning Resources. Tuition for the course is $470 plus a $15 nonrefundable registration fee. The course fee includes a Uniform Access Account which will provide access to the Internet from June 27, 1994-Jan. 27, 1995.
