Using the Internet for Curriculum Development: A Team Approach
for Educators

This summer, the University of Washington will offer a new course
for educators who want to use the Internet as a resource for
building knowledge, solving problems and developing information
skills in a global network environment. In this five-credit
course, collaborative roles of school library/media specialists,
classroom teachers, and educational technology specialists are
modeled as curriculum projects are explored, adapted and
developed by teams. Internet tools including Gopher, Veronica,
listservs and K-12 newsgroups will be covered, as well as issues
affecting educators, such as ethics of access, copyright, network
structures and censorship.

The course includes a five-day lab, June 27-July 1, and an online
independent study component, July 2-Jan. 27, 1995. The lab, held
at the Issaquah School District computer facility, simulates a
classroom environment using a local network. During the online
independent study follow-up, participants will continue their
professional collaboration and integrate curriculum applications
at their school site. Instructors will continue to assist
participants through regular online mentoring.

The instructional team for the course includes Linda Baker,
technology consultant for Rainier Beach High School and teaching
associate in education at the University of Washington; Andrew
Barker, technology coordinator for Lakeside School and Internet
trainer; Sheryl Burgstahler, assistant director of Information
Systems for Computer and Communications at the University of
Washington and director of Project DO-IT; David Edfelt,
educational technology specialist and coordinator of Technology
Information Project, Issaquah School District; Madelynne Johnson,
librarian at The Bush School and presenter on K-12 Internet
applications; Sandra Koehn, media specialist and district staff
trainer in Processing Information Environments for Bellevue
School District; Jonathan Kochmer, author of "The Internet
Passport" and Internet consultant; Jamieson McKenzie, director of
technology, Bellingham Schools, and author of "Power of
Learning;" and Janice Perry, elementary teacher in the Seattle
School District and 1991 Christa McAuliffe Educator of the Year.

Prerequisites include basic Internet or e-mail experience and
access to a computer and modem for the online independent study
component. Individuals may register for five credits of either
EDC&I 494 or LIBR 498 credit graded on a credit/no credit basis
only. The course meets the requirement for Learning Resources
endorsement areas #4: Information Services and #6: Instructional
Methods in Learning Resources. Tuition for the course is $470
plus a $15 nonrefundable registration fee. The course fee
includes a Uniform Access Account which will provide access to
the Internet from June 27, 1994-Jan. 27, 1995.

For a brochure with registration information, call 206/543-2320
or 1-800-543-2320. If you have any questions about the course,
