As a piece of literature, I think that THE GIVER has much more depth than most of Lowry's other books--including NUMBER THE STARS. Both are excellent books but THE GIVER represents more of a literary risk for her as an author. I am glad for us that she took that risk and that it was so rewarded. It is easily my favorite Lowry book, followed by AUTUMN STREET. Both of these have more appeal for mature readers than her other books. Personally, I think a "meatier" piece of literature about the Holocaust is Jane Yolen's DEVIL'S ARITHMETIC.
