Literacy is the standard that measures success in appropriately
identifying, sorting, interpreting and producing symbols of communication.
I would hope our education extends beyond the written word to include
an oral and aural context. I also include non-alphabetic communication.
Literacy of symbolic imagery -- how to interpret a TV commercial, for
example, would seem to me to be essential in measuring success in
dealing with communication.
