The 23rd Annual International Association of School Librarianship
Conference will be held July 17-22, 1994 at the University of
Pittsburgh, Pittsburgh PA.

The theme is Literacy: Traditional, Cultural, and Technological.

Howard, Author of many childrens' books.

THE CITY, THE UNIVERSITY, THE SCHOOL

Pittsburgh, a metropolitan area of 2.5 million people, is a major
cultural, corporate, health care and education center located at the
junction of three rivers in western Pennsylvania.  Pittsburgh is
served by major airlines, Greyhound Bus Lines, and Amtrak, and is
convenient to interstate highways.

The University of Pittsburgh, now more than 200 years old, is the
site of the 1994 Conference of the International Association of
School Librarianship.  The campus, situated on 125 acres near the
Carnegie museums and public library, is dominated by the landmark
42-story Cathedral of Learning.  The University, one of the major
research institutions in America, has 34,000 students, 8,500 faculty
and staff, and hundreds of degree programs.

The School of Library and Information Science is the largest school
of its kind in North America and among the most diversified, with
760 students from nearly 30 countries. Between the two departments,
Library Science and Information Science, ten degrees and programs
are offered:  Master of Library Science, Master of Information
Science, Master of Telecommunications, Ph.D. in Library Science,
Ph.D. in Information Science, Bachelor of Science in Information
Science, and certificates of advanced study.  The Department of
Library Science offers two certificate programs for school library
media specialists as part of its degree programs and sponsors the
"Summer Institute for Librarians and Teachers Who Serve Youth," a
series of professional development workshops offered annually.
