To recap - Day one was Saturday. From the Anchorage paper, "They came. They mushed a few minutes. They stopped. End of story on Day of of the 22nd Iditarod Sled Dog Race." There are 58 teams. Last month race officials shorted the first day's action because of the lack of snow had left Anchorage area trails in poor shape. The race started for real on Sunday (yesterday) at 10:00 a.m. at the restart in Willow, about 70 miles from Anchorage. First onto the 1,100 mile trail 5 time chamption Rick Swenson of Manley who drew the coveted no.2 bib at the pre-race mushers banquet. This year's field includes four time winner Susan Butcher of Manley and former champions Rick Mackey of Nenana, Martin Buser of Big Lake and Jeff King of Denali Park who last year set the course record of 10 days, 15 hours and 30 minutes (that should give you an idea of how long the race will be). I'll do the report up until next Monday and then I'll have to turn it over to one of my colleagues as I am off to Chicago and like you will read the progress over LM_NET. Have a good week.
