**** There were many replies to my request for gradebook software. As
you can see from reading below, there seems to be no general agreement
about which is best. I suspect, the one you are using is
your favorite! Any other comments?
Thanks for taking the time to reply,

You don't need to purchase a gradebook software for your school
district.
Different teachers use different grading systems. There is no a
universal
grading software which will serve all different teachers. The best or
easiest way is to create your own grading software which will perfectly
meet the situation in your school. It is not difficult to write your
own grading software. Any database program can be used to write a
grading
software. Some "Works" packages such as "Microsoft Works"(for MS-DOS)
and "ClarisWorks" (for Macintosh) have database feature. You can easily
use both programs to create grading software. In my school, I write
grading software for teachers, each teacher uses different systems, I
only
spend about 15 minutes to write a grading program (actually I just set
up
a database).

Our teachers use Gradespeed and seem to like it just fine. We are
*not*
(as a general rule) a technology literate faculty, so the program must
be
easy to use. (I don't have enough grades to use it myself.)

For a Mac platform, you might look at CSL Marks by Chancery Software of
Washington (state). While I haven't needed to use it as a full-time
Librarian, most of our staff does use it now.

Gradebook Plus is a product that has turned computer phobics into
computer lovers. It's a wonderful product and the best part is the
cost:
$200 for a school site license. I checked and they don't offer a
system
wide license, but $200 per school is a bargain. I'm at home, but I
think
Broderbund has taken over the marketing. We've been using it for 3
years
and can't say enough good things about it. It's available for both Mac
and DOS (same price). Will check on Monday to be sure about the
company.

Techers in the Amherst School District use GradeBook Plus
available from Mindscape or SVE (SVE markets it for
Mindscape, I think.). We have a building license for it,
and have versions that run on the old Apple 2E's, Macs
(now all running System 7.) and MSDOS. Occassionaly,
someone has a problem with it but as this is the
third year we have had wide use, the teachers are running
into very few difficulties. They are happy with the
features and many no longer even trasnfer them to
grade books.

I bought a gradebook program in January and all the teachers who
are using it are very happy. It is easy to use and prints out lots of
useful reports and progress reports. We only have Macs in our
building, but I bought the site license for both Mac and DOS because
lots of teachers have IBM and compatibles at home. The Mac program was
$500, DOS was $300. The program is Mac Grade Book from Schoolhouse
Software, 1509 Egan Street, Denton, TX 76701. 817-383-2161.

We purchased _Making the Grade_ for both Dos and Macs on our network.
Each teacher gets a disk and runs their system independently of others.
The license also allows teachers to use the program on their home
machines. We looked at several other programs including _First Class
Gradebook_, and selected this. The computer science teacher reviewed
several programs at Macworld before we settled on this.

Good Luck in your search!

I used Report Card (Sensible Software, Inc.) for a
number of years while I was teaching Spanish, and LOVED it. A
number of other teachers at my school did also. The computer
teacher did a workshop, presented various kinds of software,
and highly recommended this as the best.

You can use it for any number of classes, you can weight areas
as well as individual activities, the program will allow you to
print out individual grade "reports" (wonderful for parent
teacher conferences--somehow, they tend to "listen" to a
computer printout, and LOVE to keep their own copy!), and you
can also print out grade sheets by class, using only their ID
#'s instead of names (for privacy). It was easy to use (I
started using the school copy w/o documentation on hand) and
came in different formats (I know it is avail. in Apple and
Dos--don't know about MAC, but I think so!)

I am from District 77 in Mankato, MN. I have looked at many grading
programs over the years and am now looking at one district grade
program.
I have come up with Micrograde 3.0 as my choice. It comes in both Mac
and
Dos formats and also converts back and forth from Osiris. It's a great
program.

It is from Chariot Software Group, San Diego, CA, Ph. 619-298-0202. I
have
called this number many times on questions and they are very helpful.

Good luck!

Our teachers are using _Grade Machine_ from Misty City Software. I am
at
home now and do not have access to the address, but can send it if you
are
interested.

We hold a site licence to the Mac version; cost is related to size of
school. Our school of 1330 paid about $350. We also hold a single
copy of
the DOS version for one teacher. That was $69.00. I inquired about
whether
a site license would provide for both platforms, but the answer was no.

Teachers seem well-satisfied with the program. It allows for a lot of
tailoring to individual grading systems, prints nice individual
reports, etc.

If I can provide futher info, let me know.

Paula, call Copu-Teach at 800-44-TEACH. They will send you a free demo
disk of Grade Quick! which is a very nice program, and, they provide
tech. support. Good luck.

We are using a product called Grade2 from Excelsior software. It is
a
very powerful gradebook program. You can keep grades, print reports
(it
has a report editor), and even track mastery of specific objectives if
you
wish to. It does take a little effort on the initial setup, but once
set
up, it works great! Approximately 1/3 of our teachers are using it
right
now. We anticipate everyone will use it within the next two years.
They
do offer various purchase options and it is available in both IBM and
MAC
versions. The data files are interchangeable. There is also a Windows
version. They have supporting products such as a Quiz generator called
Quiz2 and an interface that they say will allow direct import of grade
information into administrative packages.

Hope this helps.

Our teachers use Grade Machine for the MAC. Both upper elementary and
Middle
School use the program and seem to like it lots. I asked two teachers
about it
and they said they liked it because there were so many choices for
customizing
the program. A site license is available from Misty City Software,

We recently purhcase Micro Grade. It comes in MAC, DOS and Windows
versions and has site licenses available. I think we paid 600-700 $$$
for
the site license. This includes the legal!!! right to give each
teacher 1
copy of the program and they may copy the documentation also legally.

I don't have the company name in front of me, but if this sounds
interesting write back and I will find the name and the 800 number.

Paula, We use Mac Gradebook, but even our district instructors do not
feel
that it is very good. The teachers are using it, but seem to find that
it doesn't give them all that they need. Their reports have to be run
separately for each class--takes a lot of time, paper, and ink. Kathie
