The ISBN (International Standard Book Number) consists of 10 digits. The
first digit signifies the country of publication. The next set of digits
is the publisher's code (the largest publishers seem to have the shortest
codes); the next set is the code for the item itself and the last digit is
the check digit, derived from an algorithm that checks the accuracy of the
other numbers. The different sets of numbers are divided by hyphens.
Hope this helps.
