Department of Education Gopher
Author of article: Tom Baltzell (Sbaltzell@desire.wright.edu)

The Department of Education is a wonderful place for the educator. The
available educational programs is one of the largest topics of attention.
There are files for utility and for aiding the teacher in the classroom. Th
ere are files for many different brands of computers including: IBM, Apple (a
lso Macintosh), Atari, etc. In IBM programs alone, there are over 723 progra
ms for use in the classroom, not including the utility programs. I feel tha
t this source prove invaluable to anyone in the educational field, including
elementary, junior high, and high school teachers.
Connecting to the Department of Education Gopher:
To connect to the gopher, use the following procedure:
To connect through the internet:
1. At the $ prompt type:
        gopher gopher.ed.gov
2. You should now be at the main menu. Here, there are help screens to support
you on your search for materials.
3. To retrieve program files, you should move the cursor next to the "Software"
directory and press return. Here you will choose the file type you would li
ke (ex. IBM, Mac) and choose it. It will then bring up the desired listing.
4. To retrieve a particular file, place the cursor next to the filename and typ
e a capital "D". It must be capital for it to "Download". Then it will ask
you which method you would like to use. Here, Zmodem brings the best resul
ts. Then, your modem will download directly to your computer.

To connect through an 800 dial up:
1. Using your modem, dial 18002224922
2. Once logged on, you will have to register. It is free and well worth the ti
   me.
3. The menu is fairly the same as that on the internet. When you download, you
will not use a capital D, you will have to choose the doanload option from t
hem menu and then type the name of the file you wish to get.
