Dear Netters,

I need help! Our administration (HS) is asking for my
input with ideas for student identification for the LMS. Just
recently, what started all of this, was that a student gave
someone else's name, number, and homeroon to check out 2 books
-- thus proving her point that this could be done.
Subsequently, the school newspaper printed an article
challenging the system we use for checking out books to
students, if one can check out under someone else's name and
succeed; you can guess the rest.

We have Unison/Catalog Plus (fully automated) and use bar
code numbers for students each year -- but we do not physically
give them a card, or a bar code. Our population is extremely
transient, and so keeping the same bar codes from year to year,
would not be possible. Therefore, what we have done is to ask
the student for his bar code # (or his name), his homeroom # to
verify he is who he says he is, and then check out a book to
said student. But, as you can see, this is causing problems.

Could LM_NETTERS please share their policies for
identifying students who want to check out books? Only
automated LMS'S need reply, since signatures are not involved.

Please e-mail me at my VaPen address, with the following
information:

     1. Do your students have a school ID used for checking
out books from your LM center?

     2. What information is contained on the ID students are
issued (please be very specific in your details).

     3. What happens if a student loses his/her ID during the
course of the year?

     4. What happens if a student is enrolled after the
beginning of the school year -- who issues him/her an ID then?

     5. Who is in charge of issuing ID's and how is the ID
cost paid for by your school?

Thanks for your input. I'll post responses after enough
information is gleaned of interest for all NETTERS. I
appreciate your help.
