Hi :)

I have recently subscribed to LM-NET. I am an elementary school librarian
in the State College Area School District in State College, Pa. I teach in
two schools. One is K-2; the other is 3-6. Traveling on the Internet is
still very new and challenging to me, but what it has to offer makes it
worth the effort!

I am currently working with a curriculum writing team which is developing a
sixth-grade unit on understanding and appreciating other cultures. Our
district writes its own unit of study, uses the whole language approach and
uses trade books for instructional reading. There is a need to identify
books written at the grades 4 - 7 levels which have characters and settings
in countries other than the United States. Our team has identified some
but finds that it is difficult to locate books (fiction and non-fiction)
with protagonists who are of elementary school age and which are set in a
country other than the U.S.

Any ideas from you would be greatly appreciated. I will be glad to post a
list once one is compiled if interest is indicated.

Thanks,

Lynne Verity Internet: ldv1@psu.edu
