Dear Netters, When I teach the Deweys, I explain that the entire collection could have Dewey call numbers. There are numbers for fiction and biography. We don't use those numbers because those two sections are usually very large. And, it is easier to find an author's last name or a subject's last name when those sections are separated. I also teach that there are complete Deweys in reference, careers, and a special collection we have of Elizabethan and Shakespeare books. Dewey is just one classification system we use to help our patrons locate information. It's not so much a skill as it is addresses. Since the largest part of "nonfiction" is not fiction, I have no problem with the term.--elm -- Esther L.
