Jean, We follow the same policy: If you have any overdue items, you may not sign anything out. If you need another book for a report, then you'll have to bring the overdues back, or go to the public library (who, incidentally have the same rule). Do I feel that I am ignoring some "prime directive" of encouraging my students to read? No, in this case it's the student that denies him or herself (and others who want to read their overdue books) the chance to read more of our great books.
