I want to thank all those people that sent me job descriptions. Unfortunately I received some by snail mail and am not able to provide those to the group. ********************* #1 Here are our job descriptions for Ladue Horton Watkins High School Library/Information Center (9-12) Reference, Circulation, and Periodicals Assistant * Assist students with research. * Oversee magazine circulation for the high school and the professional library, checking to see that subscriptions are current, that magazines are coming regularly, and that they are routed as requested. * Keep statistics on magazine check out. * Scan magazines for articles for the News Notes. * Know the collection well enough to make suggestions at purchasing time. * Help enforce limits set by staff for students' behavior in the Library/Information Center and stay both visible and available at the entrance to the stacks. * Keep vertical file current by clipping and filing newspaper articles and pamphlets. * Create book displays on current topics. * Repair books and spine labels. * Be familiar with the electronic indexes, both use and routine maintenance. * Show library science students proper shelving and shelf reading techniques and check their work for accuracy. * Help with inventory and make suggestions as to which books need discarding. Ability to work effectively with students and staff. Interest in using library media materials and different technology. Job Summary: Supervise the day-to-day operation of the media centers, supervise and assist students with projects and assignments using materials and technology. Assist staff with materials and equipment needs. Blue Earth, MN 56013 ********************************************************************** #3 My school district, the Clear Creek Independent School District, outside Houston, Texas, has a rather outdated job description for our Library Aides. This became apparent when the new salary structure went into effect, placing them on a lower pay grade than others with similar duties. The six intermediate school librarians (grades 6-8) in this district have agreed that these are the basic duties of a library aide at our level, and should be taken into consideration. We are hoping to be allowed to rewrite the job description. I hope it helps you. _Instructional_ +Train and supervise student aides in their daily activities. +Train student aides in the use of the circulation computer. +Train student aides in use of catalog computer. +Train student aides in use of CD-ROM. +Train student aides in shelving/locating books, magazines, vertical files, etc. +Check student aides' shelves for correctness in shelving, and report findings to librarian. (Librarian takes into consideration as part of student grade.) +Confer with librarian on each student aide's sttitude, ability to work with others, etc., (Librarian takes into consideration as part of conduct or citizenship grade) +Work with general student population in use of computer catalog, CD-ROM, microfiche reader, and student copier. +Work with general student population in locating materials in the library (books, magazines, mocrofiche, etc.) +Assist and train parent volunteers. +Other duties as assigned by the librarian. _Clerical_ +Process new library books. +Design and prepare bulletin board and/or other displays. +Print and distribute overdue/fine notices. +Print and distribute library cards as needed. +Repair damaged books, replace computer labels, etc, as needed. +Input information into library computer. +Maintain computer student information files (new, withdrawn, address change, schedule change.) +Maintain information files on lost materials with a view to returning payments to students materials are later found. +Laminate materials for school personnel and PTSA. +DEAL WITH the Xerox machine. +Collect and maintain records of payment for fines and lost books - issue refunds as necessary; prepare monies for deposit. +Record and report attendance each period. JOB REQUIREMENTS: 1.Grade 12 or equivalent plus a Library Technician Certificate and experience in all aspects of library technician work as outlined in the job duties. 2.Must have working knowledge of the Dewey Decimal system and Sears subject headings. 3.Experience in an school setting would be an asset. 4.Ability to use a computer to perform library tasks and procedures. 5.Must be a self-starter and be able to work effectively with minimal supervision. 6.Able to work with and relate to children and professional staff. 7.Able to maintain the integrity and confidentiality needed to work in a school setting. 8.Must have a working knowledge of the French language, if appropriate. 9.Audiovisual training or experience would be an asset. Maintain collection on a day-to-day basis, i.e. carding, shelving, mending, filing and general circulation procedures, etc. 3.Maintain the card catalogue, either in traditional or electronic format, as appropriate. 4.Prepare and monitor overdue lists using a data base program. 5.Maintain library budget: prepare orders for resource and other materials; maintain budget records using DB program; follow district procedures for receipt of goods, approval for payment and closure of purchase orders. 6.Assist with supervision of students in the school library resource centre including book exchanges and noon-hour library duty, as required. 7.Prepare displays, gathetional or electronic format, as appropriate. 4.Prepare and monitor overdue lists using a data base program. 5.Maintain library budget: prepare orders for resource and other materiassistance services. 9.Maintain picture, pamphlet and vertical files. 10.Provide reference services to staff and students. 11.Direct and supervise parent volunteers, clerical and other support staff and student assistants, as required. 12.Perform other related duties as required.
