In my own library I have not had to write any requisitions EVER that were
to drain down Federal Funds. Back in the 1960's I was busy spending
Federal Funds all the time. Perhaps I could make the mistake I read a
few minutes ago of saying that I had had no Federal Funds for the longest
of times. But I am a resident of Maryland and I know exactly what has
happened to a lot of our Federal Funds in the past few years. Instead of
them being spent in small amounts library by library our money has been
pooled and has setup and developed what may just be the best new Gopher
in the USA SAILOR. This Gopher is available free for every citizen of
the state of Maryland. All of us will have a free local phone call to
SAILOR by the end of 1995. Currently a large number of our counties are
"up" and on SAILOR with local phone banks in our public libraries. Some
of our public libraries will be offering (for fee) E-Mail addresses and
full Internet accounts. But the most important part is that this project
is making access to the Internet and to all of our public library
catalogs, community bulletin boards, local governmental information, etc.
freely available to ALL the citizens of our state. This is such an
exciting project!!! So I know exactly why we need to work to continue
Federal Funds. Perhaps, if you think you have not benefited from Federal
Funds you should check in the greater library community not merely in
your own library to see if there has been Federal support for libraries
recently. I would REALLY be glad to see Federal Funds available on the
level that they were in the 1960's so that our school library/media
specialists would again be as busy as I was in those days-barely able to
even write the requisitions fast enough to draw down the funds. But in
the mean time, I hope we will all support any efforts ALA and others
attempt to keep those funds coming at least at current levels. By the
way, why don't you all telnet to our very close to perfect (how is that
for bragging?) Gopher. It isn't all it will be, but it certainly is
marvelous for a brand new baby. Sailor.lib.md.us
