Elaine Moore, award-winning author of over 18 books for children
including GRANDMA'S HOUSE, GRANDMA'S PROMISE, DEEP RIVER, THE
SUBSTITUTE TEACHER FROM MARS, and WHO LET GIRLS IN THE BOYS'
LOCKER ROOM, has a ten-page study-guide packet available for
teachers. The suggested activities and discussion questions
contained in the study guides were contributed by teachers who
utilized Elaine's books in whole language and integrated language
arts activities in their classrooms, PK - 8. Although her books
are fiction, they ar particularly known for their usefulness in
science related studies.

Since GRANDMA'S HOUSE was published in 1985, Elaine has visited
over 400 school and convention halls across the USA and into
Canada in an effort to spread her love of reading and joy and
writing. She feels that meeting teachers and joining them in the
process of building the future though our young students, has
changed her life. In appreciation, she would like to make the
study guides available to teachers.

GRANDMA'S HOUSE was noted as one of the top ten picture books
published in 1985 GRANDMA'S PROMISE and MIXED UP SAM were IRA
Children's Choice Books; therefore, it is believed that most
school libraries will already have the titles on their shelves.
In the event that teachers need to obtain copies, Moore's books
are available through the public library and book stores. Or,
she is able to mail signed copies to those who need them.

The study guides are free; however, Elaine asks that only one
packet be sent to a school. Since the activities fit many grade
levels and abilities, she asks that teachers duplicate the guides
for their colleagues. Since Elaine will be absorbing the cost of
mailing the study guides, she asks that you contact her by note
or letter:

          Elaine Moore
          702 Seneca Road
          Great Falls, VA 22066

Or, yo may FAX her at 703-404-2010. Give her your name and the
name and address of your school. Because of the cost (remember
this is the individual author -- not one of her New York
publishers), she is unable to absorb the cost of E-mail. She
hopes you understand.

Subject: New Info in the JEI FTP Site

This is to announce that we now have nearly 150 teacher-developed
activities for the use of scientific data CD-ROMs in the K-12
classroom now available on the internet.

These actvities are currently available via ftp to jei.umd.edu in
"/pub/jei/Teacher Developed Activities" or via gopher at
jei.umd.edu under the JEI archives / Teacher Developed
Activities.

Those activities which are still coded like jei-xxx.txt are the
newly placed activities. A full catalog will be available
on-line in a couple days, as well as descriptive titles for the
files.

Please feel free to browse and use these activities. The content
is of quite variable quality and reflects the product of efforts
by teachers both in JEI workshops as well as other contributed
activities. JEI provides absolutely no warranty as to the
accuracy or quality of the activities.

We do hope you will find these activities useful either directly
in your classroom or as a basis for developing new one.
Modifications to these activities are welcome and you may upload
them to the jei site for posting in this area. Please contact me
if you are interested.
