Advice On File Server

Greetings!

I need advice on how often to shut down my file server.  I'm running
Follett Unison on IBM equipment, and there is much discussion in the
district on when/how often to shut down the file server.

Does shutting down the file server *really* wear out the switches?

One individual says to power down on weekends, another says just for long
breaks, such as Thanksgiving break.

What do you tech experts think?
