What is niche publishing

Hi,

I have a friend who is getting her media endorsement on her teaching
certificate.  In one of her classes she is supposed to find out about
"niche publishing".  Currently she knows that it is a highly specialized
form of publishing.  It's a new word out there!  Does anyone know anything
about it?
