Thank you so much for the interesting responses to my questions about
whether dept. chairs at the sec. level teach a full load of classes, are
given extra release time, whether a suppliment is given and if so, how it
is calculated. There were many letters. I will try to briefly cover the
ones that were not posted on the net, but sent only to me.
Again, and again!....thank you for this wonderful resource!!!
Katie Bailey Seabreeze High School Daytona Beach, FL baileyk@mail.firn.edu
(all spelling errors are mine...due to finger tangle disease! :-)

Alicia M. Astorga aastorga@ccantares.wcupa.edu:
We are a 7-12 girls independant school. Our dept. chairs. teach the same
number of classes (5) as everyone else. ...stipend of $400.

Marianne Haase haase-m@hcca.ohio.gov
...depart heads (1 for each curriculum area and 1 for unified arts), all
receive a supplement based on years of service. Dept. meetings held after
school. Librarian is not acknowledged dept head..but expected to attend
meetings.

Gloria Duritsa duritsa@genesis.dug.edu
Dept. heads free of homeroom assignments. ..receive one period per day
designated a dept head period. Suppliment - $295.50

Shelley Lochhead S-Lochhead@mentor.unh.edu
$2000 stipend. Flat rate.

Susan Baker sbaker@orca.esdil4.wednet.edu
No release time, teach full load, receive a $3000 yearly stipend regardless
of dept size. Library Media Specialist also is considered part of the
group, but without the stipend.

Julie Burwinkel burwinkel_j@hcca.oecn.ohio.gov
Supplement based on number of teachers in the dept. Minimum around $550.

Valorie C. Ritenour ritenour@umd5.umd.edu
Dept. chair teach fullloads and get pay based on number in dept. Chairs are
on "administrative duty roster" staying late and locking up the building.

Pope popeda@heidelberg-emh2.army.mil
..teach overseas for DOD. Salaries are based on the average of data from
large districts but are considered good in most stated other than CT or
Alaska. Dept. heads get no free period, but all teachers have two of seven
periods free. Suppliment of $400 - $500 depending on dept. size and budget
for the year. ..expected to log around 80 extra hours per year.

Mark Williams marwill@eis.calstate.edu
Dept. Heads are paid by the number of positions in the dept. Teach a full
load. "As a librarian I am a dept. head, but do not get a suppliment, as I
have no teachers in my dept."

Sandal Lynn Stephenson sandal@tenet.edu
Dept. heads get an additional period of "free" time, plus their confernce
period. All dept. heads have the 1st period of the day free, either as
conference or supervisory period. They use this time to meet with the
principal once a week (It is called staff meeting and is EXTREMELY helpful
for a school as large as ours 2,200 students, about 145 teachers. Also get
a monetary supplement...flat rate...about $1500 a year.

Sharon Murray murrays@dover.d12.ar.us

3 years ago they recieved a period off to meet and handle responsibilities.
2 years ago they recieved $500 each and no extra time. Last year they were
told that they would recieve the $500 but it didn't happen. This year we
are waiting to see... The job is passed around to diff. members of the
dept. each year. Suppliment is a flat $500 across the board.

Barb stover bknelson@csn.org
Our dept. chairs either are paid or receive a period off every day. The
pay is a flat rate. Sure would be nice if pay was pro-rated.

Connie Wright connieW078@aol.com
..given one extra period "free" used to not have study hall or detention
duty either....but we ran out of staff to do these jobs , so now dc's may
do these AND recieve a stipend. Given a fee supplemented by the number of
teachers in the dept. and whether or not they are tenured or not....all
depts. and/or grade levels have chairpersons except the library (4persons
in the districe...two of which are noncertified librarians but are
certified teachers.)

Lee D. Gordon lgordon@nevada.edu
teachers teach 5 periods and have one prep period. DC's teach 4 classes and
have 2 preps, one for dept. business. No extra money, just an extra period
off, which if yu ask them usually isn't enough.

Carol Kohnen cC518567@Mizzou1.missouri.edu
Regular FT teachers have 5 classes for each of two semesters. Dept. heads
have 5 classes one sem., and only 4 classes for the other. If not poss. for
a dept. chair to be relieved of a class for a sem., s/he is given a small
stipend..flat $200.

Mary V. Jameson mjameson@services.dese.state.mo.us
Dept. heads teach full loads. Primary function is to keep track of purchase
orders and communication between admin. and teachers. Stipend is $300 per
year...flate rate.

Sandra M. Barron sbarron@tenet.edu
One extra "conference" period for "dept." planning for dept. chairs. This
year they received an extension of contrace--two more days. Also receive a
stipend..believed to be flat rate. They meet twice a month (at lunch) with
curriculum dean and once a month (before school) with principal.

Gerry Clare gclare@cln.etc.bc.ca
Dept. heads teach full load in most cases. Bonus $ same for all -- a % of
top teacher salary in district.

Carol Orlandi corlandi@omnifest.uwm.edu
By contract, dept. chairs are given 1 period of rleased time for ever 25
sections taught in the dept., or major portion thereof. So, with 40
sections of English I get one period released. (That is not enough!)
Sometimes chairperson of small dept. like art or music, cannot be given a
released period. ..they are given a supplement of one hour's pay per day.

Rone Pastecki vpast@llwmht.ll.pbs.org
In the district where I am employed as the Chair. of the Lib. Med. Dept., I
teach for 1.5 days a week or equivalent of 2 pd.s per day. Other chairs
ahve sim. teaching assignments. Remainder of the work day is spent on daily
operations of the dist. dept. (I am responsible for 18 K-12 LMCs, 16 LMS, 1
aide, and 7 clerks. ..also expected to attend admin. meetings. I am
expected to work for about a week during the summer (I do get paid extra
for this.) Dept. heads are part of the teacher's union at present. We
receive a flat rate for our services (which is less thatn what the coaches
for the football team receives!).

Bonnie Fulmer gbf1@maristb.marist.edu NY
Until 3 years ago, our 9-12 high school had heads of depts. of 6 members or
more. They were released from one class and were peid a flat stipend of
$1000 a year. Responsibilities included mostly dissemination of paperwork,
organizing dept. meetings, textbook and supplies ordering, etc.
At the beginning of our last contract, the position of dept. head was
eliminated in a cost-cutting move. Redpons. were supposed to be divided
between the principal and asst. principal, but of course their interest in
the resp9onsibilities was not the same. We have effectively shot ourselves
in the feet by doing our best to pick up the responsibilities by divvying
them up within depts., ensuring the positions will not be reinstated. But
there is a real breakdown in effective communication and organization, and
the cohesiveness that made for an effective program is definitely lacking.

Thank you again for all of the responses!!! I would be happy to forward
the complete individual responses to anyone who wants them.
My adminstrator is THRILLED with this net! Keep smilin'!!!
