Okay, here are the reponses in a readable format! :-) Many thanks to those who responded and especially to Melissa Davis who posted directions for those of us using PINE MAIL systems to compose a HIT. I had the exporting thing down, but didn't know anything about the <Ctrl-R> command (by the way, you should be able to edit your file while it is still in your work directory--that way you don't have to download it to your computer and then upload it again). I guess it's true--you learn something new everyday. And to Peter, your apology is accepted, but really unnecessary. Maybe others can learn from my mistake. I honestly didn't know that attaching the file would cause it to be posted in mime format. Anyway, I hope the following responses are helpful! :-) Tranna --------------------------------------------------------------------- >From ROBJ@sirs.com Thu Sep 8 18:35:54 1994 If you haven't already received your answer, here it is: Club Kidsoft 1-800-354-6150 voice 1-408-354-1033 fax $9.95 a year, I believe. I like it, and I am not a kid. Enjoy! Rob --------------------------------------------------------------------- >From HP_DIAL@midyork.lib.ny.us Thu Sep 8 18:36:13 1994 Hello--I personally subscribe to it and think you only get one cd-rom initially and maybe 4 magazines? My honest opinion is it's not worth the money. The magazine comes with some activities but my kids never did do them. I think the cd-rom is just the demonstrations to the software and if you want to purchase the software you contact someone(?) and they give you a password (after you pay the price) that will unlock the software from the cd. I think that's how it goes...if I'm incorrect and you find out different lete me know. mary hp 8-) Mary P. Previews a lot of software that you can buy elsewhere much cheaper. The couple of free games for kids are pretty lame. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- >From guusje@tenet.edu Thu Sep 8 18:36:49 1994 It's called KIDSOFT and costs $17.95 for 4 issues plus the 4 CD's...the CD's have samples of programs on them and if you like anything you can call an 1-800 # and "buy" the program..you give them your credit card # and they give you a code to unlock the software and you can download it. Or you can buy it cheaper form MacWarehouse if you aren't into instant gradification. The magazine is very slick and flashy...I find it cluttered but my own two kids (age 12) ADORE it. I ordered a subscription for my school library too. The reviews are not objective so don't count on using it as a selction tool...more as an awareness tool. Plus, its one of the few computer magazines for kids. to order call them at 1-800-354-6150. They have a home computer center and young children. They loved it. They said there were a variety of software programs demonstrated on the disc and for a reasonable fee they could keep the program. Marjorie Pappas ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- >From hgordon@eis.calstate.edu Thu Sep 8 18:37:15 1994 Kidsoft is an excellent product with product descriptions, demos and games on the CD and a large colorful magazine that is most suitable for elementary age kids. You can even download programs directly from the cd when you phone in an order. Call 800-354-6150. It costs $30 for 4 cds and 4 magazines. Be aware that the kidsoft stuff is primarily oriented towards younger children. I thought it would be fun for my kids to look at the demos and get ideas about new software. We received the first magazine, catalog and CD-ROM but when I installed the CD-ROM last weekend and tried to use it, I got an error message and the program crashed. I have called their technical support number (not an 800 number) two days in a row. Both times a woman took my name down and said a man would call me back. He must be the only one working and has a long list of people to call. They told me it might be a few days before he calls back. So I am not impressed with their technical support. It looks as though the disk has a lot of neat stuff on it, so I am not going to give up on it yet. The magazine plus CD (4 issues in one year) cost $29.95, the magazine only is $9.95. The address is Club Kidsoft, 718 University Ave Suite 112, Los Gatos, CA 95030-9958 , or call 1-800-354-6150. Hope this helps!
