WE USE PROQUEST AND HAVE FOR THE PAST THREE YEARS. WE HAVE THE CD
EDITION AND ARE VERY SATISFIED. STUDENTS HAVE ABOUT A 95% SUCCESS
RATE IN GETTING FULL TEXT. THE SERVICE FEATURES ARE FANTASTIC.
HOWEVER, THE COST IS STEEP.

Hi, Michelle,
Did you know you could get free preview (30 days) of Infotrac and CD
NewsbanK?
I have Infotrac im my center for 4 years now and the students use it all
the
time. I am now previewing CD Newsbank, Popular Periodicals and Biology
Digest
from EBSCO. Students use both. I think I'll look at other companies
before I
decide on a second full-text on cd-rom service.svc
I keep physical copies of the "weeklies" like People,Us news& wld reports,
Time
etc. I also get mags. that are of interest to the students like Rolling
Stone,
GQ, Motor Trend, Popular Science, etc. In all, I have 40 titles. Ten of
these
titles I get free from a sponsor (Local College)looking for PR. This gift
subscription is from Ebsco .
Good luck! I hope this helped .

We use Infotrac with fulltext on the network. Yes, students do print a
lot, but we decided we still came out ahead because they didn't cut up
magazines and didn't steal them. My goal this year is to try to make
them more selective about what they choose. BIG GOAL!! We love Infotrac
and wouldn't change. It is expensive, but it is worth it.

due to the full images Proquest has. They do have a full text version
I believe is called Resource One. Ebsco as well as Wilson both have
full text databases. We finally chose TOM Sr. from Information Access
Co. for our two high schools It is a full text magazine and newspaper
database. Our three mid schools are using Super TOM Jr. which is
simply a smaller version of TOM Sr. using only magazines related to
that age. We have been very pleased with these products. You can
download to discs or print from them. We try to control the printing
by charging $0.05 per page. It isn't much but they seem to think more
about what they want printed. In retrospect I would have contacted
all of these companies and requested previews of their products, which
they will all do. Set these up in a lab or library with enough
computers and let the students and staff test them and give feedback
as to which they preferred. Information Access will even send the
equipment for free and give, I think, a three month trial period.
Contact Mardi Small at 800-227-8431 at Information Access in regards
to this. I don't have this type of info for Ebsco or Wilson but it
should be easy to get.

One thing we realized after a few months use was that this was the
most popular research tool and that it needed to be on not only the
library network but our computer lab as well which requires a CD-ROM
tower. We are going to install a tower by Christmas. Hope this helps.

Dear Michele,

We subscribe to Infotrac. It went over $2000/year for this year's
subscription. That is steep, but we really use it. It is one of our main
sources of current info. and has practically replaced our use of Reader's
Guide. Printing is not a problem, because the articles are not that
long.

We have an older edition of SIRS on CD-ROM and really like it, but we
can't afford it every year. Printing is a much greater problem because
the articles tend to be rather long, so I monitor it's use more carefully
than I do Infotrac.

We use magazine express (UMI) Full text of 100 magazines. We get full
image, I think that's what it's called. Looks great. Like a xerox.
Includes pictures, charts etc. It's $3,100/year. I think it's
worth it. We also pay about $500 for printer cartridges. I have cut donw
on other mags. Just some that kids like to look at. Mag Ex is heavily
used.
I have thought about charging for copies, there are machine to
add to printer (not sure how) so it becomes copin op. One of the
Ann Arbor schools does that.(typo above coin op). I've tried TOM at our
jr. hi. now there's super TOM. You can get trials for TOM, for UMI too and

compare them. TOM is networkable and cheaper to run, but print out
isn't so great. UMI can only network index disc. I just learned that UMI
will soon require 2 index drives if you want to search everything back
to '88 or '86. I can't afford another drive just yet besides my
kids just use newer items.
Hope al l is well. Anitra

I just had to meddle a little... Why would you want to put the popular
magazines on a full text subscription. Why not just order the hard
copies so they are easily accessible and colorful and all that other
stuff. I can accept fulltext for storage for those that would be used
for research but I sure can't see the purpose for consciously selecting
that medium for current popular reading. Perhaps I misunderstand - or
am just hopelessly oldfashioned. Kari Inglis kbw_inglis@mec.ohio.gov

Dear Michele,
I looked at both Tom Jr. and Ebsco and decided on
Ebsco. I like it that there is no extra charge to network it.
The people at Ebsco have also been vern cordial and helpful
when I called with questions. Tom Jr, on the other hand, seems
to have separate charges for everything you do.
Another advantage for us is that our school system has
decided to order our magazines through Ebsco's service. They
have great savings they offer and next year, when I renew my
magazine subscriptions, I can jsut renew the Middle Search, too.
I'm at home, but as I recall, Middle Search represents
about 150 magazines and aroud 40 of them are full text. The
information is easy to search and offers summaries on all the
articles, even if the full text is not available.
Hope this helps you in your decision!

JJ

Michele,
I saw your request for info on periodicals. We are a K-12 school and last
year settled on , after extensive evaluation by a tech committee of
teachers, librarians, admin, parents, to go with Academic Abstracts put
out by EBSCO. It is like MAS but includes some collegiate journals. We
have Full-Text Elite - the kids use it all the time - and so do the
teachers! Easy to use, and more full-text all the time. No pictures,
charts, etc., though. Response from Ebsco is great. I have no complaints
except that we now have to get a third CDROM drive since all the data
doesn't fit on two discs anymore.

Michelle,Glad to hear from a fellow badger

At Belleville Schools we selected INFOTRAC with full text and the
SIRS DB. I've found IAC (INFOTRAC) fine to work with. It covers many of
the same mags as does the Readers Guide. Whatever they run, you get.
They're adding titles in full text almost every month. Basically we love
it. Compared to the tedium and numerous pitfalls of using the RGPL, plus
only seeing one year at a time in the index, is a serious limitation on
many students chances for success with periodicals. I somewhat monitor
student printing to avoid obviously waste. In truth, I'm so happy to see so
many of my students succeed with an effective search with the keywords ,
for example, that I'm fairly liberal with printing.

Much of the time the SIRS db is my students first choice. Articles
are gathered because they are on the SIRS 50-some topic lists. I believe
they use 800 sources. Thousands of topics, some rather distant from what
you might consider Social Issues. are organized beautifully and presented
full text. They present three search modes and some decent trainng
materials for student use. The search engine is very capable. All
articeles you find in the index are printable. It contains a lot of
interesting graphics if you have a decent printer.

We also have Facts on File (db of articles from all over the world,
unusual news stories, CNN Global View, Time

Each year I trim back the paper mag budget, saving lots of our useless
labor.

Michele,

Our high school library just got EBSCO'S Magazine Article Summaries
Select. (This has 60 titles full text.) The kids love it. I have yet to
establish a policy on printing. They would print everything if I allowed
them. So far, I tell them that if the article is more than 120 line (2
typed pages), then then can copy it to a disk if they have access to a
computer at home.

MMichele,

We just switch from Infrotrac with Microfiche support to Ebsco MAS full
text elite. The kids are loving it and surprisingly have not printed
page upon page. This may change but will hope for the best. The really
like the full text rather than having to use microfiche and pay to print
for the fiche copy.

this has 125 full text periodicals and 423 abstracted titles. Even the
abstracted are helpful to the kids.

Hope this helps.

We are using Magazine Article Summaries Full Text Elite and love it. It has
citations for over 450 mags and full text articles for 100 plus. Biggest
drawback right now is it requires 3 cds to run it if you want to be able to
search back to 1984. if you want to search onlyy to 1991 you need two
drives.
The kids love it and it is easy to use. We rarely don;'yt find what we are
looking for but we do go through a lot of paoper. We subscribe to over 150
mags but there are many titles on it that we don't buy so that is aplus
also.
We looked at Reader's Guide Abstracts and Info trac but they did not have
this
coverage. Callme if you have specific questions. 315 453-1142.

We have INfotrac, TOM full text. We really like it. Yes the kids do go
through quite a bit of paper, but _I_ think it's worth it.

We do not have them download to disk because the computer we have it on
does not really lend itself easily to doing that.
Our SIRS does, however, and we have done some. So far, there haven't
been very many kids who have wanted to do that. Most prefer to print out
what they need on site.

Our big problem is that we only have one station with access to TOM. We
also have another single station for Wilsondisc and a third for SIRS.
Until we have a network of terminals for multiple use, we can't possibly
serve our students (900+) with only electronic sources. We have dropped
several print titles, but far from all. The reason would be readily
apparent if you could have been here today. We had classes of 28-30
scheduled in five hours today, and two other periods, we had _2_ classes
of 30 or more in at the same time. All were using periodical resources,
so we had kids on all the computers (with a time limit) and many others
using the good old print _Reader's Guide_ and checking out print copies.
Even though we have extensive back files of periodicals on microfiche,
many students still prefer to have that paper copy. We need, and we use
all three formats.

If you are planning to network several stations, it might be different
for you. We don't plan to do away with all our print subscriptions for
some time yet.

Good luck.

Joyce
